An Encouraged Southern Baptist

I am a follower of Jesus Christ first and foremost, but I am an encouraged Southern Baptist. I have been in Southern Baptist churches all of my life. I was saved and baptized in a Southern Baptist church in 1979. I learned about God and the Bible in a Southern Baptist church. I learned the importance of the Great Commandment and the Great Commission in a Southern Baptist church.

In the church I grew up in, we didn't even know a controversy existed over the inerrancy of the Bible. We always believed the Bible and thought anyone to be completely foolish who didn't. I was licensed and ordained in a Southern Baptist church.

I am a grateful beneficiary of the Conservative Resurgence having gone through seminary in the late 1990s under the leadership of men who love God and His Word, and unashamedly proclaim it. I have served as a pastor in Southern Baptist churches for the past thirteen years.

I have heard all of the predictions of our death as a body of believers. I am fully aware of the pride and apathy that has existed among many in our denomination. But I am also a person of great faith who believes that God is not finished with us yet.

We are a people known for our love for God and His Word, and for missions and our love for the lost who need Jesus Christ. I am encouraged after being in Louisville at the SBC this week. I am encouraged by the visionary and passionate leadership of men like Dr. Danny Akin and Dr. Johnny Hunt and many others. I am thankful for men who have the boldness to communicate that perhaps we are not as strong as we could be or should be, but by the power of God we can refocus our resources.

I am praying that we experience a God-anointed, Great Commission Resurgence. Let's unite under the banner of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and stop talking about things being different and let's make a difference! Let's start where we are and be obedient to who God is calling us to be as His children for the glory of God among the nations.
