At issue is what happens between our justification (when we are saved) and glorification (when the good work is completed in us). We are engaged in a spiritual battle for our holiness and growth in Christlikeness.
Paul writes- present tense (I am), calls the Law spiritual and good (with a desire to live righteously), in the context of a discussion on sanctification. He is writing from the perspective of a maturing Christian, engaged in the battle against sin.
- Christians are still capable of sinning.
Sold into sin's power v14, I do what I hate v15, I do what I do not want to do v16, nothing good lives in my flesh v18, sin lives in me v20, evil is with me v21
- Christians hate sin.
v15 I do what I hate.
Psalm 97:10 You who love the Lord, hate evil!
Get a vision of God's holiness, truth and righteousness.
- Christians want to live righteously.
v18 There is no ability to do it.
Key- vv24-25 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord!
The victory has been won for us by the crucified, buried and risen Lord Jesus!
There is a battle and we can live the Spirit filled life and experience the victory God intends for us.
